GCSE Graphic Communication
Introduction
Graphic Communication at KPHS is a creative and innovative subject that combines artistic expression, digital technology and visual problem-solving. Through the WJEC Graphic Communication specification, we support students to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to communicate ideas effectively through visual media while preparing for further study and careers within the creative industries.
The curriculum is designed to immerse students in the complete design process, enabling them to investigate, analyse, develop and realise creative ideas in response to a range of design briefs. Students begin by building a strong foundation in both CAD and hand-rendering techniques, creating a portfolio of practical skills that supports their progression throughout Key Stage 4. They then apply these skills through industry-inspired projects, including branding and promotional design for a drinks product and packaging design influenced by graffiti and contemporary visual culture.
Learners explore the work of designers and gain an understanding of how graphic communication influences advertising, branding, marketing and consumer engagement. They develop an awareness of industry workflows, project management processes and the importance of responding to client needs and target audiences. Through research, experimentation and evaluation, students learn to refine ideas, make informed design decisions and communicate visually with clarity and purpose.
The curriculum encourages creativity, independence and resilience. Students are given the freedom to develop personal responses to design challenges while learning how to manage their time, respond to feedback and evaluate the effectiveness of their work. The Non-Exam Assessment and externally set assignment provide opportunities for learners to produce a substantial body of work that demonstrates creativity, technical skill and individual interpretation.
Career awareness is embedded throughout the course, introducing students to pathways in graphic design, branding, packaging design, UX/UI design, motion graphics and wider creative industries. By developing visual communication, digital literacy, project management and presentation skills, students gain valuable employability skills that support progression to post-16 study, apprenticeships and future careers.
Graphic Communication empowers students to become confident, creative and reflective designers who can communicate ideas effectively in an increasingly visual and digital world.
How Graphics Supports Our School Values
We Co-operate
At KPHS we know that effective design relies on communication, feedback and collaboration. Our students regularly discuss ideas, evaluate the work of others and respond constructively to critique, helping them develop the teamwork and interpersonal skills valued in both education and the creative industries.
We Pioneer
Our KPHS students are encouraged to think creatively, challenge conventions and develop innovative solutions to design problems. Through experimentation with digital technologies, branding concepts and visual communication techniques, they learn to embrace originality and become confident creative thinkers.
We Belong
At KPHS, Graphic Communication celebrates individual creativity while encouraging students to learn from the ideas and experiences of others. By studying diverse designers, responding to real-world audiences and sharing creative work, students develop confidence in their own identity and feel part of a wider creative community.
